Choosing a Domain Name PDF Print E-mail

Selecting the right website domain is a key element in a website's success.  We have had numerous clients who have used  extensions or free web services which have severly limited their exposure and online success.  We can help you not only find the right domain, purchase it at a reasonable price but we will also manage your renewals and keep your domain safe.

Selecting the right domain name requires some time and attention.  As we often say to clients a domain name that 'says what is in the tin' is the best kind of domain name ... in other words it should say or indicate what people can expect from it.  Common mistakes people make in choosing domain names

•abbreviating the name, for example 'Roses in Portugal' should not be abbreviated to 'rip.com' ... people are more likely to associate that with funerals than roses.
•abbreviating is also a poor choice of domain name as while it makes sense to you to call your business John James Sweet Factory abbreviating it to jjsf.com will make little sense to people looking at it on the web
•choosing a name that is is no way associated with what you do, this often happens when people have a domain name that they have not used and decide to use it for something entirely different
•making your domain name too long or complex, always remember that ideally you want people to be able to remember your name and not have difficulty spelling it when they are typing it
•choose a domain name that is easy to spell out and explain to someone when you are speaking to them on the phone or in person
•not taking time to find the right domain name and if you are starting out a business check if the name you are giving your business has an available domain name.
Today it is becoming ever more difficult to secure a good domain name, be patient, try variations and be sure to avoid mistakes like those above.

What do you do if you have a domain name that isn't working for your business?  Well there are two things you can do

1.stick with it and hope it gets better, depending on how bad/good it is.
2.buy a more suitable domain and keep the old one just repoint it to the new domain and run them in tandem for a while.  Don't dump the old one until you feel certain it isn't attracting any traffic any more.
