When summer comes to an end many businesses are wind down, some businesses find that summer is the quietest time of the year and they are stepping up their activity.  All businesses have cycles but seasonality can be one that most heavily impacts businesses because they are reliant on a 'good season' for their income. For instance the beach souvenir shop is heavily reliant on a hot summer and many beach visitors for a successful income.

Seasonality can be expensive when the business incurs expenses all year but is limited to a profitable income during a limited time of the year. While not every business can overcome seasonality there are several ways we have assisted businesses in thinking about their business differently and by doing so they have either extended their season or developed an 'all year' business.

Complimentary Products/Services

Start by reviewing your customer base and your business and then employ lateral thinking to find complimentary products or services for example the sport shop specialising in diving can focus on skiing for the winter or promote diving holidays to winter sun destinations. The old story of the person selling rain umbrellas in winter and beach umbrellas in summer is one that comes to mind.

Incentivise

For businesses who focus on summer trade incentivise customers to buy earlier before the season and put your extra or outdated stock on sale at the end of the season. Extend your season by offering out of season discounts, activities, events, make it attractive for people to consider buying out of season. In these times when people are more considerate of how they spend their money this can be very appealing.

Adapt your Product/Service

There are times when you can adapt your offering so as to make it more interesting for people to buy from you out of your normal busy period, one business with busy summer accommodation offering patios and a swimming pool has included wood burning stoves in apartments and a jacuzzi, thus making it interesting for people to come in the cooler or cold periods of the year when a getaway is still desired but with a warm and cosy aspect. They have also adapted from an international summer market to a local winter market, thus adapting their target audience.

As the saying goes 'there are many ways to skin the cat' and when you are in a seasonal business you need to employ every opportunity to expand and increase your offering.
